About Air Canada

Air Canada was founded in 1937 and its main hub is Toronto Pearson International Airport. The other hubs are at Calgary, Montreal-Pierre Elliot Trudeau, and Vancouver International Airport. Air Canada has over 400 aircraft in its fleet and offers flights to 350 destinations in 125 countries worldwide.

Air Canada is one of the founding members of the Star Alliance. Star Alliance is now one of the largest airline alliances in the world, boasting nearly 700 million passenger members. Passengers with memberships in the alliance can benefit in the form of priority boarding and flight upgrades. Other airlines which are part of the Star Alliance include Asiana Airlines and Turkish Airlines. Codeshare agreements form part of Air Canada's flight programmes. Partner airlines include Thai Airways and Air New Zealand.

How do I check-in online with Air Canada?

If you are going to check-in online for your flight, you will need your travel documents and Star Alliance membership number (if available). Air Canada's online check-in allows you to choose your seat, as well as print and download your boarding pass up to 24 hours before your flight leaves. You can even print your boarding pass at an airport kiosk if it's more convenient. Then, all you'll need to do is drop your bags off at one of the baggage drop-off points at the airport.

Online check-in is not available for unaccompanied minors, customers with special requests, customers travelling with pets, as well as customers travelling with a wheelchair or those that require special medical assistance.

What is my checked baggage allowance on Air Canada?

The Air Canada baggage policy states that you are allowed one bag up to 23 kg. Bags must not exceed a maximum size limit of 158 cm, which includes the total combined length, width and height of your bag. Multiple bags, even if under the weight threshold, will incur additional fees. Business class passengers and Star Alliance members are allowed additional baggage, but amounts are dependent on the specific flight route. Please contact Air Canada for specific requirements.

Sports equipment must also conform to the size and weight regulations. If included, they will count as a single unit. Occasionally, some bags will need to be opened by security during screening. If you have used a Travel Sentry Approved or Safe Skies lock, our agencies will be able to access your bags. However, if you choose to lock your bag another way, the lock, as well as the bag itself, may be damaged if security access is required. Therefore, these locks are fitted at your own risk.

To avoid baggage handling delays, please do not use bungee cords or other types of straps around your luggage, as they can impede processing through the system. Likewise, please remove old airline labels to avoid them from being erroneously scanned. For safety, always have your name, address, contact information, and your final destination clearly labelled on the inside and outside of your baggage.

What hand luggage can I take on Air Canada?

The Air Canada hand luggage allowance states that you can bring two items on board. One can be as large as 55 cm x 40 cm x 23 cm, but you must be able to place it in the overhead bins yourself. The smaller bag, usually a handbag, laptop bag, or briefcase, cannot be larger than 43 cm x 33 cm x 16 cm. Don’t forget that these size limitations include extraneous parts of the bag, including wheels and handles. There are no weight limitations, but oversized bags will have to be checked-in as hold baggage, which will incur additional fees.

Children travelling on an adult’s lap without dedicated seats are not provided extra baggage allowance. However, passengers are allowed to carry on an extra suitably sized bag for baby care supplies, such as nappies and baby food.

Liquids are restricted onboard. If you plan to take them with you in cabin baggage, they must be in containers with a maximum volume of 100ml. This restriction includes toothpaste, creams, gels, lip balm, and lipstick. All items of this type must be presented to security and stored in a clear plastic bag that measures no larger than 20 cm x 20 cm.

For safety and security, car and house keys should always be placed in your cabin baggage and taken onboard with you. The same applies to high-value personal belongings that you prefer to keep in contact with you at all times, including cameras, jewellery, and electronic devices. Please keep in mind that when passing through security, all electronic devices need to be turned on to prove that they are operational.

Outbound flights were changed with the 2nd flight leaving earlier than the 1st flight arriving. Couldn't change to another airline which would have meant sitting in an airport for 10 hours. Got a refund but lost around £40 for a fee. Not great service. No apology. First time user and after this service I would avoid.
